My husband has been on vacation for the past 2 weeks and just entered into his 3rd week at home. He's transitioning from the Coast Guard to private industry...will start a new career next Monday with Booz Allen Hamilton Corporation. It's all good and he's ready to begin a new chapter in his life with BAH. While home he has completed all on his list of things to do (he'll never catch up with my list)...Jordan's bedroom furniture (purchased on Cape Cod at an antique shop in '83) has been painted white....the magnolia tree has been topped....the upstairs has been measured out and we are on our way with the flooring company to have hard wood put in upstairs and the garage floor has been "painted", which is no easy task as it had to be cleaned and dried and etched and painted with a beige paint then sprinkled with little flecks of something. It looks awesome! But as much as I've enjoyed having him home I needed some alone time today. I headed down I-95......had no plans.....just headed South. I first stopped in Ashland at ScrapArtz. It's going out of business.......closing down. So sad! However, judging from what I spent there today, Robin the owner, could probably start up again! I love a sale........love a bargain......love when it says 50% off! I love to spend money to save money! After ScrapArtz I headed North again...toward home. But I took a bit of a diversion.......got off at the King's Dominion Theme Park exit....took a left onto Doswell Road(just over the railroad tracks) and head toward Squashapenny Antique Junction. I don't know if words can adequately describe Squashapenny. It sits just a few feet off of the railroad tracks at Doswell Junction. It's only open Saturday/Sunday/and Monday. The owner, a gal about my age, doesn't own a computer nor does she know how to use one. But she certainly knows the antique business. She buys up general stores and antique folk art from Virginia to Georgia....and points West. She knows her business and has a huge following! She has customers from all over the United States and does props for the movie industry I'm told. Suzanne allowed me to take pictures inside her amazing store today. I was a bit hesitant to ask.....she wasn't a bit hesitant to say yes. If you ever find yourself on the I-95 corridore between Washington, DC and Richmond on a Sat/Sun/or Mon do yourself a favor and get off at the Doswell exit...take a left just over the railroad tracks and follow it until you see...
The inside of the store is just as eclectic as the outside....a feast for the eyes....
This is the heat source......and it keeps things warm as toast!
My purchases sit on the countertop sans the glass cleaner and the cat.
Should you find yourself in need of a wooden leg....this place has one!

I left with one of these. I love the graphics!
This greets you in the parking lot....as does this.....
Now remember.......if you ever find yourself in the area be sure to stop by....you won't be disappointed. Oh......and be sure to make a pit stop at Burger King just before the railroad tracks....Squashapenny doesn't have a public restroom!

T-O-T-A-L-L-Y gobsmacked (Candice's word...too good not to become part of the vocab) I've never, ever seen such an amazing store. What a treat. A feast. Thank you for sharing this!

I loved the vintage Halloween owl. I remember those.
My kids would have done something corny for me under that big hand. Next time you go, do a little acting on the side! Ha ha, that would be great.
Awesome post, Dana. : ) I hope you're having a great day!

Thank you for doing this post. My friend, Patrice, found it. She's been telling me about Squashapenny for a while...she has a very sweet, sentimental story about it from before it was an antiques store. We are actually doing a book club event completely around a weekend trip there. I love seeing a preview but the bad part of me wants it to be a secret until after I've been there! I saw something in your photos that make me think I might have to head down there sooner than later. I love your blog; it's just beautiful. When you get the chance, come visit me at www.doojies.blogspot.com , I'd love to see you there. Stephanie

I must have looked for 4 hrs. or longer, and did not want to leave till I realized it was closing time. Sorry Suzanne. But I am enjoying the Railroad Express sign, and other things as well. Thanks to you and your Husband Richard for being so polite and helpful that Sunday.
